About the site

The North Northumberland Online website has been on the internet continuously since 1997 (it was known as BelfordWEB until 2001) and that longevity is one the reasons why search engines like it. Our site appears in the top ten results for a wide range of popular Northumberland-related search terms.

Currently the BBC, Daily Mail and The Independent link to us, as do many others. And we must mention the Berwick Avertiser which got us off to a cracking start with an article back in 1997 (shown below).

Our site attracts around 80 unique visitors each day, 30,000 a year. Quality not quantity and we advise you to be sceptical of any site in the area that claims to have millions of visitors! About one in every fifteen visitors to the site clicks on an ad. A very good click-through rate.

The local economy

We believe that, since it began, the website has generated hundreds of thousands of pounds for the local economy in the area between Berwick and Alnwick. During that time it has not received any funding or support from borough or parish councils and regional tourist or development agencies. Relying solely on advertising instead.

Original content

Many websites are little more than listings or regurgitated 'cut and paste' content with over-used free photos. A cynical attempt to pull in money from local businesses owners who aren't expert in online matters. In contrast, our site features original writing, photography and video material that showcases the area.

Community websites tend to have poor design and are loaded with content that, frankly, many visitors have no interest in. They want to know what they can see and do when they visit. Our site delivers that.

At the time of writing, the official visitor site for Northumberland barely mentions some popular holiday destinations and doesn't link out to local websites that do. We think that is worrying and this why we need strong local sites that have great pages.

However, this takes time, commitment and a combination of specialist skills which, despite all the "anyone can do it" hype, few people in the area have.
