The club promotes the growing and showing of show leeks and organises numerous
events to raise money for charity. There is an Annual Leek Show but compared with
the fund raising events of the club and its members, this seems almost an after
thought. In 1994/5 the club sent nearly £2,000 to Multiple Sclerosis Society.
In 1995/96 they had raised £1,350 for Seahouses and District Cancer Aid.
The fund raising events are always significant in the Belford social calendar
and very well attended.
The 1995 event list is very typical:

races and riders as well as a tote. This year one of the hobby horses was mysteriously
kidnapped and the story raised weeks of publicity in local papers.)

Northern Causeway is neither a club nor a business but a private support scheme
for people with mental health problems. They operate a drop-in centre for people
from Belford, Seahouses, Chatton and surrounding areas who want a chat, some company
or advice in an informal surrounding. Up until February of 1995, they operated
out of premises in 7-9 West Street and they are responsible for the mural painted
on the side of that building. They have participated jointly with the school to
do fund raising on Red-Nose day. Their efforts have been supported by visits from
Michael Bentine, who opened the previous premises, and Brian Blessed. They have
also produced a video using original music and poetry created in the centre.
