CLUBS, SOCIETIES AND OTHER ACTIVITIES: Part 2

Belford Junior Football

Organisers:   John Thompson, Tom Wilkins & Bill Martin
Venue:   Belford Football Field
Time:   Saturdays 1.30pm - 3.00pm
Membership:   24, aged 6 - 10 years
Fees:   50p per game


The club has a twofold aim of encouraging youngsters to play football and learn more about the games whilst giving their Dads an excuse to avoid helping with the shopping. Matches are played on Sundays which doubtless offer similar domestic opportunities.

In spite of their schizophrenic aims the players won two trophies in 1995. They won the Local Schools Cup at Seahouses and were runners up in both Wooler and Horncliffe tournaments. The fathers rewards are not recorded.

Community Club Leek Club

Membership:   25, mostly 40+


Those familiar with competitive Leek growing will realise that most of the activity takes place under a shroud of secrecy in the members' gardens and allotments. The year's efforts are then proudly displayed at the Annual Show.

Belford Village Leek Club

Fees:   £10 per annum


As well as leeks, the club promote the development of flowers and vegetables for display at the Annual Show. However, this is a competitive hobby and the Prize for Best Three Leeks and Best Leek in Show were won by Ashley Hogg of Belford.

The show was very successful this year in spite of the abnormally dry weather and 40 stands of flowers and vegetables were on display. The Prize for the most points in the show was awarded to Jim Sprott of Common Flat.

Quoits Club

Membership:   Membership:8, aged 18 to 55


Although the membership is small, the club has honed its skills sufficiently to win the League 3 times since 1970 and the Knockout Cup 3 years in succession.

1st Belford Scout Group

Time:   Sundays 6.30pm
Membership:   7 scouts + Group Leader & Assistant
Ages:   10½ - 14+
Fees:   £1 per week subscription.


The scouts aim to promote scouting activities in the area, teaching different aspects of self-survival in difficult and unsociable conditions. Activities include map and compass reading, all manner of camping techniques, cooking with the minimum of apparatus. Scouts work towards gaining various badges for learning various skills.

The main events include camping weekends, and District events: St. George's Day Parade, Swimming Gala and the Carol Service at Ford.

In 1991/2 1st Belford Scouts had a special fundraising effort to fund their new minibus and raised £4000.

Belford & District Homing Society

Pigeon Racing has a long tradition in the whole of the north of England. This exclusive band of breeders from one of the remotest outposts fly their pigeons from over the Channel for distances ranging from 400 - 600 miles.

Their efforts gained one first and one second placing in the Border
Federation.

North Northumberland Group of the Scottish Rock Garden Club

The society encourages the cultivation and appreciation of rock garden plants (alpines). They study their natural habitats in the wild and their use in gardens.

During the winter the group hold a series of lectures and in the summer they make visits to notable gardens.

Ferguson Bowling Club

The club competes in the North Northumberland Bowls League, participating in the annual pairs and triples competitions.

Belford Reading Room

Membership:   5 youths, 20 adults aged 14 upwards
Fees:   Adults £7, Juniors £4 per annum


The centre provides a facility to play or watch snooker & billiards. The Reading Room also acts as a venue for village organisations to hold coffee mornings and similar events. More prosaically, it acts as the local Polling Station during election time.

Belford B team won the Knockout Cup and the Handicap League in the Wooler and District Snooker League in 1994. Belford A team won the Tillside League title in 1988.

Belford Youth Dance

Membership:   14 youths, aged 12-15; 10 adults
Fees:   £5 per term (10 weeks)


The group allows young people to express themselves through the medium of dance sometimes culminating in a performance. This year, three of the dancers participated in the local pantomime.

Since 1970 the Belford Youth Dancers have given performances at three dance evenings held at Belford Middle School and one at the Alnwick Playhouse which was reported as "... a night to celebrate what was best about our education system - the nourishing of the whole person - both physical and emotional; the parts John Patten cannot reach!" The latter alluding to the incumbent Secretary of State for Education. Participating dancers are listed in the programme as:- Lisa Jefferson, Karin Thompson, Katherine Lowther, Katie Anderson, Hannah Westcott, Sarah Sanderson, Natalie Dale, Paula Jefferson, Emma Tait, Nicola Hogg, Louise Nixon, Nicola Lindsay, Kay Flounders, Julia Wood and Andrea Faetz.

Belford Playgroup

The playgroup affords an opportunity for young children to mix with their peers and learn to share and develop their learning skills. It provides both education and entertainment.

During the Belford Carnival the children sing in the Market Square on July 6th at 10.00am. Mrs Atkin recalls that during one concert the heavens opened up and drenched singers, parents and listeners alike through their summer clothing to the skin. Unperturbed the children continued to sing as though it were the balmiest of summer days. They also hold a Summer Fair on 17th or 18th July.

Mothers and Toddlers Group

Membership:   20, Adults and 16+, children 0 - 3 years.
Fees:   50p per session


The Group is a centre of social activities for young mothers and interactive play for their young children. The group is organised very closely with the playgroup and is run by the same officers and committee to ensure a smooth transition to the playgroup as the child matures.

Fundraising takes place to cover costs and supply new equipment. In 1995 the main event was a Bar-B-Que with Bouncy Castle which raised about £450.

Belford & District Local History Society

Venue:   Originally Belford Craft Gallery later the Black Swan
Time:   7.30pm on 4th Wednesday of each month except July and August.
Membership:   40, aged 18 and over
Fees:   £2.50 per annum


The society develops our interest in the archaeology of northern England, in social history, local history, economic history, families and notable events from the past. Knowledgeable speakers are invited to share their learning and visits to sites of interest are arranged. This year the trip was to Beamish Open Air Museum.

A social evening is held in December which is usually combined with some historic display.

A member of the society has compiled a schedule of all the gravestones in the churchyard and the Society also carried out the first Survey of Belford in 1970.

Belford Wildlife Watch Group

Organisers:   Mary Barber & Judy Foster-Smith
Venue:   Outdoors in the summer & Belford Youth Centre in the winter.
Time:   Monthly, usually on Sunday afternoon
Membership:   18 families whose children are mostly 4 - 9 years (first school age)
Fees:   £3 per annum + optional membership of the national organisation.


The group visits beautiful places and encourages a caring attitude towards the fragile environment. It seeks to develop children's knowledge of wildlife, plants and animals.

As well as the monthly visits, a summer camp was organised for one night in 1994 and 1995. A two night camp is under consideration depending upon the weather and enthusiasm.

June   Walk at St Abbs with Kevin Rideout to look at flowers and butterflies.
July   Annual camp. Two nights at Mount Hooley in the College Valley. A guided nature walk.
September   Learn about trees with John Steele, National Park Chief Warden. Ingram National Park Centre.
October   Graham Bell on Holy Island to look at and learn about birds.
November   "Creatures of the Seabed" Bob Foster-Smith's underwater videos.


Belford and Seahouses Action Research Committee

The members meet 3 or 4 mornings a year at home.

The committee raises funds for medical research into the prevention and treatment of disabling diseases. Activities include coffee mornings, fashion shows, lunches and bridge drives. They are one of several successful fund raising groups in the village and report a total of £2,545 raised in 1994/95.

Belford Youth Theatre

Sadly the Youth Theatre ceased its activities in September 1994 after having put on 2 plays a year for 17 years. A notable success came when they won a No Smoking campaign with a pantomime in Newcastle.
