POPULATION

Comparable information is complicated by the organisational changes which take place over the years. Some statistics apply to Belford Parish area only and some to Belford combined with Middleton. The primary sources are the 1991 Census and the 1995 Register of Electors.

The Census shows 499 dwellings in Belford parish, 48.6% being owner occupied, the others being rented either privately or from the local authority.

It seems likely that the Right to Buy legislation will have reduced the rented proportion slightly since 1991. All dwellings have an inside bathroom and WC and 80% have some form of central heating. 74% of households own at least 1 car. Five additional bungalows have been completed at the top of North Bank since the census, with plans for three or four more.

In 1991 almost 1/3 of the population (29%) was over pensionable age and 20.6% below their majority (18 years). Assuming that the age profile remained constant and compared similarly with Middleton Parish, a total population for the survey area of Belford with Middleton can be estimated as follows-

Number of Electors from 1995 Register: 963

Proportion of Juveniles from 1991 Census: 20.6%

Estimate of Population 963 x 120.6% = 1161

The true figure will vary from week to week as people move in and out of the area and as nature takes its toll and replenishes with new citizens, an occupation the human race seems to manage quite effectively the world over.
